Mill’s Third Stage

  • prove that since hedonism is true, it follows that the right action is to produce the greatest amount of overall pleasure possible
  • this is not much of an argument
  • Mill is not trying to provide reasons to care about morality
  • Mill assumes consequentialism is true
  • as a result, he thinks it simply follows that the right thing to do is to maximize happiness for everyone
  • Act-Utilitarianism

  • the morally right thing for you to do in any situation is the action you can perform that will result in the greatest possible balance of pleasure over pain for everyone
